How much will my wedding cake cost???
I actually think that there is less secrecy about wedding cake prices now than there was say 10 years ago. The advice to me when I started out was to only start a conversation about prices after an initial consultation. This is thankfully no longer the norm, but it’s still very difficult to give a ball-park figure.
All my cakes are bespoke, designed with as much or as little input from the customer as they require or have time for. Some designs are painted with buttercream, and other are sculpted with white chocolate ganache. All are 100% edible, unlike fondant cakes, which are decorated with sugar flowers and cannot be eaten.
The price will vary according to the level (fullness) of design, the finish (ganache is generally more time-consuming to sculpt with than buttercream), and obviously the size.
When it comes to size, you need to decide if the cake is going to be served as a dessert for your guests, or cut into party slices to be enjoyed with a toast or during the evening. Dessert portions are generally as tall as the tier - so four layers of sponge - and about 1.5 inches square. Party portions are half this size.
Very generally, a sculpted ganache three tier cake to yield 100 party portions will cost around £1,100.
A much larger ganache cake to serve 100 dessert portions will cost in the region of £1,600.
A painted buttercream cake to yield 100 party portions will cost around £950. As a dessert this would cost around £1,200.
