Are you afraid of making a bad cake?
As cake creators, we are artists, and we know that it takes courage to create good art
But what if you're afraid your cake won't work out? Are you afraid of judgement or criticism? Having to start over?
Well, first of all, you aren’t alone. We've all been there and still go there, whatever our experience or skill level. No one ever created a successful painting, building, or pair of shoes because they didn’t feel fear. Artists feel fear all the time because they approach their work with sensitivity.
Creating a cake design from scratch and executing it means exposing your talent and curiosity, which can be scary.
“A ship in harbour is safe, but that is not what a ship was designed for.”
So you do need to be brave to be an artist. But don't wait to become fearless. There’s a big difference. And you don’t need to feel brave to get started! You need to feel curious.
Stop focusing on what you want the finished cake to look like, who might see it, or what anyone - including you - might think. Most importantly, don't imagine what the cake designers you admire would feel about it.
Instead, focus on the practice.
Let your curiosity guide you. My most successful designs have begun with the germ of an idea without a clear vision of what the finished product would look like. I'm always amazed by workshop students' designs after they've left the studio and just had a play. One day of being shown they can, they do!
