Why a wedding cake is so important to your big day

Often couples will be intrigued by my stand at a wedding fair, as the cakes are a bit out of the ordinary, and we’ll chat for a bit and then one of them will say “Actually we’ve decided not to have a wedding cake,” or “We’ve not even thought about having a wedding cake.” I’ve been able to convert many of them, as I really believe the cake is crucial to any celebration, not just a wedding, and here’s why:

  1. You’ll never forget the cheers that erupted from your guests when you cut your cake. There may be a gentle applause after the ceremony if permitted but this is different - a raucous burst of delight from your guests that expresses their love and joy for you both.

  2. It’s a brilliant photo opportunity. As you both focus on the cutting, your expressions and posture will be flattering, natural and relaxed. You may be exchanging a few words. It’s intimate but a moment shared with the room. Wedding cake cutting photos are the most commonly displayed shots in a couples’ home.

  3. A wedding cake makes a statement about you. You can have fun with the design of it - have a tiny dog peeking out from the base of a tier for example. It may be the only aspect of your day that you really get to contribute ideas and work with the maker. It will reflect you as a couple.

  4. The cake will bring all the visual elements of your day together as a focal point. Designed well, it will incorporate the flowers you have chosen to decorate the venue and reflect the spirit of the venue itself. It can also have detailing inspired by your invitations or other collaterall.

  5. You can eat it. An average three tier cake will feed £140 people, and they’ll devour it after hours of dancing and drinking!!
